Health Testing

Our cattery is negative for the following diseases:

Burmese / Mandalay: Hypokalaemia and Gangliosidosis.

Burmilla: Polycystic Kidney Disease and Hypokalaemia

When we began breeding, we DNA tested all of our cats for these diseases. In addition to DNA testing any new breeding cats we may introduce to our cattery, we also ensure we periodically DNA test or lines to ensure that our kittens continue to remain clear of these diseases.

It is extremely important when searching for Burmese and any of the breeds related to Burmese (Mandalay, Burmilla, Tonkinese, Tiffany, Bombay) ensure that the breeder has at the least tested their breeding cats for Hypokalaemia.

Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) is not a common issue in Burmese and related breeds, but this is an issue to be aware of. Unfortunately there is no DNA test for HCM in Burmese or related breeds at this time, and so our only tool is to have a program in place for regular heart scanning of breeding of cats. Hopefully in time a DNA test will become available, which would then be used in conjunction with regular scanning of breeding cats.
